Acousti-Coat is heavy bodied, water-based, flat latex paint formulated with ceramic microspheres and sound absorbing fillers. The combination of a high loading of ThermaCels with their vacuum centers reduces sound transmission; the soft pigment fillers absorb sound and prevent it from bouncing off surfaces. It also provides a highly effective insulating benefits to the painted surface. Sound Absorption Testing A sound absorption test, conducted under the requirements as set by American Society for Testing and Materials Standard Test Method for Sound Absorption and Sound Absorption Coefficients by the Reverberation Room Method, ANSI/ASTM C423-77, was performed, Acousti-Coat. Two 15mil WFT costs of the product were applied to a one-half inch gypsum board backing mounted on a 2" by 2" wood frame providing 2" air space. The sample was laid directly on the floor, and the following test results were obtained: FREQUENCY: 125, 250, 500, 1000, 2000, 4000 ABSORPTION: 0.5, 0.6, 0.75, 0.79, 0.81, 0.8 NRC = 0.71 Understanding the benefits This product is designed to act as a "sound sponge." It absorbs the sounds within the room, such as, home theaters, churches, meeting halls, cathedral ceilings, etc. While this paint is heavily fortified with our ThermaCels and sound absorbing fibers, the standard 2 coats will reduce the echoing a basic amount. We always tell customers, the more coats applied provides more sound absorption. Thicker sponges absorb more. What does it mean Sound Absorbing? In typical setting where sound absorption is needed, such as sound booth, panels are used to absorb, like a sponge, sound waves bouncing off the panels. These panels have divots that break up the sound and do not allow those sounds to bounce back, think echoes. The texture of this coating (determined by roller thickness or spray setting) aids in breaking up sound reflections the same way. What will Acousti Coat do and will not do? It will: Apply Acousti Coat and your neighbors hear you less! Reduce the echoing sounds within a room. It will produce a highly reflective heat barrier. Reduces heat intrusion into adjoining rooms. It will NOT: Deaden sound from next door, upstairs, etc. For this use our SC 1000 Stop you from hearing drums played in the garage Stop adjoining room noises at high volume Stop you from hearing cars drive by. Still have questions about using this paint? A customer of Hy-Tech painted his vaulted living room ceiling with our Barrier Coat (for insulation benefits), and then six coats of Acousti Coat. He allowed for each coat to dry before the next, testing with a radio on a set volume and a decibel meter after each coat. Every sound produced in movies and music is heard clearly without any distortion or echo. The results are, you feel like you are in your own private movie theater or recording studio. The sound is rich and inviting. Coverage area for Acousti Coat How much paint do I need to reduce the noise I keep hearing in my living areas? The best example we can give to customer is: In an area of 8ft x 6ft, 1 gallon of Acousti Coat will cover an average 50 square feet with 2 coats. A few things to think of when purchasing paint: What are you painting? What are you trying to achieve by painting? Many customers tell us they want to stop all the excess noise. We ask, are you hearing echoing within the room? Or is the sound coming through the walls into your room? (In other words, noises from outside.) Acousti Coat is designed to reduce noises, sounds, traveling in and around a room. The reason Acousti Coat covers so little an area is, unlike other "sound absorbing paints," Acousti Coat performs like a sound sponge. When you look at 2 different sponge types you can see a difference, such as a dish washing sponge versus a car washing sponge. You would not use the thin dish sponge on your vehicle or the thick car sponge on your delicate dishes. In the case of Acousti Coat, the thickness of the paint, the amount of coats you put on your walls or ceilings will give the area a great chance of absorbing as much sound as it possibly can. Understanding what Acousti Coat does. Acousti Coat is specifically formulated to reduce noise within a room. We cannot stress this enough. If you are looking to reduce the bouncing sound waves in a space, this paint will do that. It will deaden, reduce, the echoes from human speech, sound systems reverberating around your room. Understanding what Acousti Coat does. Think sponge! It sounds weird to think of a paint product like a sponge, but this is true about Acousti Coat. Absorbing sound is what Acousti Coat does, just like a cleaning sponge absorbs water. The thicker the sponge, the more water it holds. The same concept can be used when applying Acousti Coat to your painting project. Thicker is better. Understanding what Acousti Coat does. Acousti Coat requires a minimum of TWO thick coats in order for the paint to make a difference. The reason for this is due to the heavy concentration of ThermalCels. These ceramic microspheres and other sound absorbing materials need to be spread uniformly on the entire wall to reduce the sound transfer rates within the room. More coats will provide better benefits. Understanding what Acousti Coat does. When at first you don't succeed, try again. The same principle can be applied with Acousti Coat. If you have not received the reduction in sound, within your newly painted space, apply another coat of Acousti Coat. Remember, the sponge, you can add more water to a sponge if you need to. Acousti Coat can be applied multiple times to achieve the reduction in sound you are trying to accomplish within your painted space. Noise Reduction Inside the space. Think Sponge! Acousti-Coat is a thick, soft coating designed to act as a 'sound sponge'. Deadens sound within the area / room the sound is created in. For sound coming from other areas, use our SC 1000. Use Acousti Coat and your neighbors hear you less. Use SC 1000 and you hear your neighbors less.
Product is designed to reduce echo and uncomfortable high frequency sounds. Ideal for home theaters, offices, meeting rooms, churches, convention areas, concert halls, etc
Coverage is 50 square feet per gallon for the minimum two coats required. This means unless you are applying to a small 50 square foot area, one gallon isn't enough.
ThermaCels included in this paint! This provides insulation properties as well. Do not add additional ThermaCels additive to this product.
White Flat Finish. Can be tinted using universal colorants, to light or medium shades. If a darker color is required it can be painted over but a very cheap flat interior paint must be used. Using a high quality paint will seal the surface of the 'sound sponge' and diminish results.
So I live with someone on the spectrum who has super sensitive sound perception and it was creating a lot of difficulty, so we bought several gallons of this paint in an attempt to turn my home office/basement into a sound proof shelter. #1 you cannot just take it to Lowes and expect them to add tint - I tried, they absolutely will not do it. Neither will HD. No one wants to risk coloring 3rd party, expensive, specialty paint. They would not do it. #2 - if you research more, you will find that you cant dilute the paint by adding more liquid, or it changes the consistency of the paint - which is key to it's sound dampening effectiveness. I saw a couple of FAQ questions where people were saying to paint over it? which the manufacturer clearly states would impact the effectiveness of the paint. The paint is TEXTURED. I was not expecting that. It is VERY thick and you will need multiple gallons to cover a few walls correctly. I painted it onto a smooth wall - and your basically painting on a thick layer of paint with a sand like quality to it. The 'sand' is the "mini sound absorbing balls" or whatever. It makes sense if you think about it. They are what break up and absorb the sound supposedly. So the paint is GREAT... except you need a LOT of it. I expected 1 gallon to easily cover the 3 walls i was doing, and it ended up taking much more. The other issue is - it doesnt behave like normal paint - so you cant just do one thick first coat - and then expect your 2nd and 3rd coats to be "thinner" like you would with a standard paint. You have to lay the 2nd and 3rd coat on just as thick as the first. So I had to do a lot of research on how to tint the paint and I ended up finding this product: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00KEUH6Z8/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 it comes in many colors. I was very skeptical but it was *awesome*! Worked 100% as described. I was able to tint the paint very easily. You will end up running into an issue once you tint the paint though - Since I expected 1 gallon to easily cover the walls, I didnt measure 100% accurately when I was experimenting with the tint. I was just adding tint until I reached my desired color. So when it came time to do a second coat - I ended up having a color disaster. You need to expect to use more than 1 gallon of the paint - so if you color it, you need to accurately measure how much your putting in each gallon. The paint is thick and textures, so If you dont evenly apply your second and 3rd coats of this paint - you can see every single place you did put an additional brush stroke, vs every place you didnt. This is why you need to make sure your prepared to lay your 2nd and 3rd coats just as thick as your first. I ended up having to mix 2 more gallons of paint in order to re-cover what I had done. PRO: The paint looks awesome though! We actually love the new texture.. It doesnt look strange at all. if you lay the paint on evenly - it looks really good. We consider it an improvement over the standard - smooth wall. It looks classy if done properly. Just be prepared - double or tipple the amount of paint you think you will need and if you tint it - make sure you get the *exact* same amount of tint in each can. if your off even a tiny bit - with this paint your going to be able to see the difference. We are now going to do our ceilings and I am going to end up buying 3 gallons for 1 bedroom ceiling. It doesn't behave at all like normal paint and you cant paint over it with normal paint - but if you apply it correctly, it looks great. I'm giving it 4 stars just because there is a certain technique to applying it that I wasnt aware of. Anyone with attention to detail wont have issues with it.
